"Closer" is written by Patrick Marber. Set in contemporary London, it tells the story of four people in the "body business:"
When their paths cross, it's a dizzying supernova of emotions, as Marber adroitly constructs various scenes out of their lives that pair them again and again in various permutations of passion, heartbreak, anger, sadness, vengeance, pleading, deception, and most importantly, brutal honesty.
- Anna is a photographer who specializes in portraits of strangers.
- Dan is an obituary writer struggling to become a novelist.
- Alice is an American stripper freshly arrived in London after a bad relationship.
- Larry is a dermatologist who finds love under the most unlikely of circumstances.
A witty, romantic, and very dangerous love story about chance meetings, instant attractions, and casual betrayals, Closer is a critically acclaimed look at four strangers with one thing in common: each other.
The play was made into a 2004 film of the same name, also written by Marber and directed by Mike Nichols. It starred Natalie Portman, Julia Roberts, Clive Owen and Jude Law. The film, like the play on which it is based, has been seen by some as a modern and tragic version of Mozart's opera Così fan tutte, with references to that opera in both the plot and the soundtrack.
